Where the R1 Story Began

HMN-20R1 T · Yamaha YZF-R1 (2020–2024) · 2021

Before the platform projects, engineering studies, and mechanically mounted HMZ Series, there was the HMN-20R1 T.

Introduced in March 2021, the HMN-20R1 T was the first HARMONIZE winglet developed specifically for the 2020–2024 Yamaha YZF-R1 platform. It also marked the beginning of our long-term development work around the R1 platform.

The Yamaha YZF-R1 already had one of the most distinctive front-end designs in the superbike category.

Its fairing, headlights, central intake, and compact proportions gave the motorcycle a strong visual identity, which meant any additional component had to be handled carefully.

The goal was not to add as much as possible. It was to introduce a new element without disrupting what already made the R1 recognizable.

The HMN-20R1 T was our first response to that challenge.

The component had to belong there.

Designed Around the R1

The HMN-20R1 T was developed as a two-piece winglet system shaped around the existing architecture of the Yamaha YZF-R1.

Its angle, proportions, and relationship with the front fairing were considered as part of the motorcycle rather than as isolated design decisions.

The aim was to extend the front-end silhouette while keeping the result visually consistent with the original bodywork.

That approach later became an important part of HARMONIZE product development: the motorcycle remains the primary reference, and the component is developed around it.

03 / ArchitectureThe HMN Approach

The HMN Approach

The HMN-20R1 T was developed around an adhesive-mounted installation architecture, allowing the winglets to be fitted without drilling into the original fairing.

That installation requirement directly influenced the product's geometry.

The available contact area, surface transitions, winglet proportions, and mounting position all had to be resolved together during development.

In other words, mounting was not treated as a separate step after the exterior shape had been completed. It was one of the constraints that defined the final form.

This approach became a defining characteristic of the HMN Series.

The HMN-20R1 T was developed as HARMONIZE's own interpretation of a winglet for the road-going Yamaha YZF-R1, rather than as a direct reproduction of an existing race component.

Its geometry was developed specifically around the production motorcycle and the installation requirements of the HMN architecture.

The materials, manufacturing methods, and development processes used by HARMONIZE would continue to evolve in the years that followed, but the principle of model-specific integration remained.

They Asked Anyway

Production of the HMN-20R1 T eventually ended, but interest in the design continued.

Years later, inquiries were still arriving from R1 owners who had discovered the product through archived photographs, previous installations, and HARMONIZE community features.

Many of them already knew it was no longer in production.

They asked anyway.

Over time, that continuing interest gave the HMN-20R1 T a different place within HARMONIZE.

It was no longer simply an older product from a previous catalogue. It had become part of the brand's development archive and a reference point for where our work with the Yamaha YZF-R1 began.

A Different Design Brief

The HMN-20R1 T was developed around a clear requirement: create a model-specific winglet for the Yamaha YZF-R1 while retaining a non-drilled installation method.

As development of the R1 platform continued, the design brief expanded to include a mechanically mounted architecture.

This created a different set of installation constraints, allowing structure, mounting points, and external geometry to be resolved as one system.

That direction eventually led to the HMZ-R1 N / NS.

The R1 remained the platform; the architecture and design brief were different.

07 / PlatformFrom a Component to a Platform

From a Component to a Platform

The HMN-20R1 T began as an individual product in 2021.

By 2022, development around the Yamaha YZF-R1 had expanded into a broader model-specific program.

Component geometry, vehicle fitment, bodywork integration, airflow analysis, and physical testing were increasingly considered within the same development process.

The motorcycle itself became the reference point for the project, rather than any single component.

This marked an important transition in the way HARMONIZE approached product development and laid the foundation for the broader YZF-R1 platform that followed.

Where the R1 Story Began

The HMN-20R1 T will not return to the current HARMONIZE range in its original form.

Today, its role is different.

It records the point at which HARMONIZE first began developing a winglet specifically around the Yamaha YZF-R1, and the beginning of a platform that continued to evolve in the years that followed.

The product was discontinued.

The idea behind it was not.
